Synopsis Martine De Clercq

How can we define melancholy?  How does  the feeling of it affect us?  Different exhibitons have shown through images in art and literature its complex history and the rich social and psychoanalytical interpretations of the notion, related to our human condition. Pamuk’s “hüzün”, Baudelaire’s “spleen”, Flaubert’s “Bovarysm”, Constant’s “mal du siècle”, Goethe’s “Weltschmerz”, Freud’s “Vatersuche”, Sartre’s “nausée’, the existential “tristesse”, Kristeva’s “Soleil noir” and Beckett’s “Texts for Nothing” are the so many expressions of a multi-layered notion and feeling.
